Services:  The IRS publicizes a list of volunteers in tax assistance (VITA) who can assist people with preparing their federal income tax forms.  The Eastern Area Agency on Aging (EAAA) will have the volunteer list.

Services:  The MRS can help with 4 programs:

  1. Property tax and rent refunds are available for people at least 62 years of age who meet low-income guidelines.  People 55 and over and on Federal disability who are lving alone are also eligible.  Couples on Federal Disability where one applicant is 55 or over are also eligible to apply.
  2. General tax assistance may be available for income eligible owners and renters of any age unless they were assisted with housing costs by government subsidy.
  3. Elderly people living in subsidized housing may be eligible for elderly tax assistance.
  4. Property Tax Fairness Credit offers a tax credit to Maine residents who pay rent or own a home. Residents who have an adjusted gross income of no more than $40,000 or who pay more than 40% of their adjusted gross income on rent are eligible for the credit. The Maine Income Tax Form includes a Property Tax Fairness Workshop to help people figure out if they qualify.  For people who do not file income tax returns, call the MRS at (207) 626-8475.
